BETTER CITY, BETTER LIFE
The theme of the Shanghai Expo is 'Better City Better Life'. This theme will be reflected in the design and content of the UK facilities.
Better City, Better Life
The Registration Document for the Expo quotes the Istanbul Declaration issued at the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements:
"Our cities must be places where human beings lead fulfilling lives in dignity, good health, safety, happiness and hope".
A City of Harmony
The Expo aims to project the key elements of a ‘City of Harmony’ and to solve the problems facing cities such as congestion, pollution, crime and conflicts.
Urban problems are believed to originate "in discord between man and nature, man and conflicts and between spiritual and material lives. Such discords if left unattended will inevitably lead to a decline of life quality in cities and even degeneration of human civilization."
Illustrating five different perspectives
The Shanghai Expo will illustrate a concept of a City of Harmony from five different perspectives and these are the five subthemes of the Expo:
1. Blending diverse cultures of the city. Harmony between the past and future. Heritage conservation.
2. Economic prosperity of the city. The innovation potential of the city depends on research capabilities and good living conditions. Implementing environmentally friendly technologies such as waste recycling.
3. Innovation of science and technology in the city. Conservation of energies. Bio diversity. Sustainable habitat.
4. Remodelling of communities in the city. Cities without slums, balanced communities, sound infrastructure
5. Rural-Urban Interaction. Interaction of farming communities with cities. Blurring of boundaries.
UK experience and expertise
These themes offer the UK great scope to showcase its experience and expertise in urban regeneration and sustainable development. We will also address major global challenges like climate change.
